The best part of the Debate League has been seeing all the development in the kids. Is that too clichéd? Either way, it’s absolutely true!

DEBATE LEAGUE MENTORS
Share your skills and enthusiasm for debating, have fun, and help to transform lives by running weekly debating clubs for primary and secondary school children in Glasgow.
We are looking for enthusiastic and committed debating mentors for our exciting Debate League programme, which pairs passionate and experienced university students with debating clubs in under-resourced schools in Glasgow.
Debating, as many of you know, can transform a student’s educational development and bolster their academic studies. It’s also great fun, and we believe all students from all schools should have access to debating if they wish.
In the Debate League programme we're working with ten primary and secondary schools, with one mentor allocated per school to run a weekly debate club, lasting 60-90 minutes per session. The programme runs over 14 weeks, and ends with The Debate League Cup, a competition and workshop day.
The aim of the project is to teach debating skills from the ground up in an engaging and fun way, while establishing a culture of competitive debating at each school. This is where you come in - we need experienced, eager people who will be committed to sharing their enthusiasm for debating with pupils, many of whom will never have debated before. You will also support the training of one or more teachers in the school, to maintain momentum after the programme ends.
This role pays £35 per weekly session (plus a travel allowance) and a PVG check is required.
Debate League is generously supported by Baillie Gifford.

Here's what some of our mentors have said about the programme:
I’ve never got tired of being constantly surprised by how much the kids have grown, by the often genius remarks they make, and by the team spirit they have fostered.
Coach, Castlemilk High School
The best thing for me has been getting to know the children, and watching them get really excited and confident about things like Points of Information etc. I get excited for them!
Coach, John Paul Academy
Knowing that you’re contributing to their confidence and argument skills is really rewarding. They’ve got so much better, and they’re all really enjoying it.

It’s been an excellent experience, and a real pleasure. Thanks for making it all happen!
